Europa and Prologis launch 600 kWp solar project at Dartford hub

Europa Worldwide Group has commissioned a 600 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system at its £30 million logistics site in Dartford, in partnership with landlord Prologis.

The installation is forecast to produce 541,800 kWh of renewable electricity each year. Based on current electricity prices, Europa expects savings of approximately £80,000 in the first year. Solar supplied more than 40% of the facility’s consumption during its first month of operation.

The 26,368-square-metre site is Europa’s European road freight hub and also supports its specialist 3PL operations, giving it substantial daytime energy demand. The project was delivered under a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement, allowing Europa to buy electricity generated on the roof without funding the upfront installation cost.

Through Prologis Essentials, Prologis managed the project from energy assessment and system design through approvals, procurement, installation and commissioning. The agreement also avoids dilapidation or exit charges if Europa leaves the building before the solar term ends.

Rooftop solar remains underused across the UK warehouse sector. UK Warehousing Association analysis indicates that existing warehouse roofs could support 17.3 GW of generating capacity, while research covering more than 300 roofs found solar on only 5%. Grid delays, structural checks, insurance and lease arrangements remain common barriers.

The installation is Europa’s first rooftop solar project and Prologis’ 48th in the UK. It is expected to provide locally generated renewable electricity for 30 years, supporting lower emissions and greater energy resilience at the site.
