A.P. Moller Capital has agreed to acquire 100% of Portek International from Mitsui & Co. The transaction will be made through the Emerging Markets Infrastructure Fund II and remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory and third-party approvals.
Singapore-headquartered Portek operates a geographically diversified portfolio of multipurpose terminals in Algeria, Gabon, Indonesia, Latvia, Malta and Vietnam. Founded in 1988, the company also provides port engineering and operations and maintenance services, mainly from Singapore and Indonesia. Its seven terminal interests serve domestic and international trade flows.
Portek’s terminals handle approximately seven million tonnes of bulk cargo, 700,000 containers and 90,000 vehicles each year. The group employs around 1,400 people across its operations and headquarters.
Following completion, A.P. Moller Capital plans to work with Portek’s local operating teams on operational performance, governance, safety, capital discipline and environmental performance. Emissions-reduction planning is specifically included in the investor’s stated priorities.
The acquisition expands A.P. Moller Capital’s exposure to transport and logistics infrastructure. Its related portfolio includes AC Logistics in the Philippines and Bergé Logistics in Spain and Latin America. The investor has also signed agreements to acquire majority stakes in Globex Investissement and Euroports.
Semih Gökmen, a partner at A.P. Moller Capital, said Portek’s diversified assets and local expertise fit the firm’s investment approach. Director Kim Thagaard Pedersen pointed to further potential across the platform. A.P. Moller Capital also acknowledged Mitsui & Co.’s stewardship of the business.
