Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals (RST) has taken delivery of a Hyster RSJ46-33XDH/62 reachstacker powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell system. The machine will handle mainly 45-foot containers, including open-top units, using a dedicated 45-foot spreader.
The equipment combines a 60kW Nuvera fuel-cell engine with a 130kWh lithium-ion battery. Its deployment forms part of a five-year innovation programme backed by the Province of South Holland and the European Union’s Just Transition Fund.
RST, Berkman Energie Services, Hyster, STC Next and HarbourHUB are developing a field laboratory that brings together the reachstacker and a modular hydrogen refuelling station. The partners will assess how hydrogen can support port and industrial processes without direct dependence on the electricity grid, while gathering operational evidence on availability, refuelling and maintenance.
The reachstacker uses Hyster’s common software architecture for electric products, supporting consistent operator controls, diagnostics and servicing. Hyster and authorised dealer Heffiq will provide technical assistance throughout the project.
The initiative also includes a joint experience centre for employees, students and logistics professionals. Training will cover the energy transition and the safe, efficient use of hydrogen. The project is intended to contribute to emissions reduction, future standardisation and skills development across the Rotterdam port region.
