Tesco is adding five Carrier Transicold Vector HE 19 Low CO2 Emissions units to its refrigerated transport fleet. Installed on 13.6-metre Gray & Adams trailers, the systems will support the movement of ambient, chilled and frozen products across the retailer’s UK network.
The units use R454A, which has a certified GWP of 239, compared with 2,140 for R452A, a widely used trailer-refrigeration refrigerant. The switch cuts GWP by almost 90% while retaining equivalent cooling performance.
The redesigned Vector HE 19 includes leak sensors and an automatic pump-down function intended to recover refrigerant if a leak is detected. Carrier Transicold and its service partners are also providing technician training, specialist equipment and ongoing technical guidance for the new technology.
Tesco operates more than 2,900 UK stores, with the trailers scheduled to run seven days a week. The five units are covered by the BluEdge fixed-cost full-service package, including annual temperature-control testing and certification, regulatory inspections and 24/7 oneCALL incident support.
The deployment gives the retailer a lower-GWP refrigeration option without changing the performance and service requirements of its national cold-chain operation. Carrier Transicold is supplying the equipment, which will be operated by Tesco.
